What Detox And Cabbage Diet Is All About

Posted on 01 September 2010 by admin

One of the new diet programs that are being introduced in the market right now is the detox diet. The name ‘detox’ is a shortened form of the word ‘detoxification’, which lies at the heart of the program.

The diet makes use of the body’s natural system of neutralizing and eliminating the various toxins that the body takes in. As an internal protective system, the body converts any material that may seem harmful to the body into a chemical form that is less dangerous.

Toxins can take several forms depending on what is taken into the body. Examples of harmful toxins are external chemicals like pesticides and household cleaners that are accidentally ingested; food additives, drugs and other food materials that may affect the body in a bad way; and of course cigarettes. Some toxins come from the body such as ammonia, a chemical produced when proteins are broken down during digestion. Because of the ingrained system, all these toxins no longer stay in the body and are excreted and flushed out in the form of stools or urine.

Basically, the term detox diet is used in the treatment of people who have become dependent on drugs and alcohol; but now with the birth of various kinds of diets, the term is used to any diet that helps in detoxifying the body.

The diet itself focuses on taking in foods that provide vitamins, nutrients and other chemicals such as anti-oxidants that help the body purify itself. There is also much emphasis on lessening or reducing the chemicals that are being taken inside the body. This is why many people under detox diet prefer to eat organic food.

Another technique with the detox diet is the emphasis on high fibers and water to help the body get rid of the toxins. People undergoing detox diet will experience headache during the first few days. Some may also suffer from excessive diarrhea so it is important to watch out for dehydration. There is also a risk if constipation if not enough water is taken in.

Detox diet however is not for people who have anemia, diabetes and heart disease. It is also not recommended for women who are pregnant or those people who are suffering from kidney problems, liver disease, underweight issues and ulcer. People with low blood pressure, low immunity, hypothyroidism and epilepsy are also discouraged to go under a detox diet.

From the name itself, the cabbage soup diet is a program that involves the cabbage soup as the central figure. It may seem absurd at first and quite different from other diet programs such as the Atkins diet and the South Beach diet but it actually has a rationale.

The cabbage soup diet is based on the assumption that diets that contain high fiber but low in fat can help the body lose weight. The cabbage soup is usually made of cabbage, onions and tomatoes. The soup is supposed to fat-burning as it has a high fiber content. In fact, the more soup that you take in each day, the more calories you will burn and the more pounds you will lose. The taste will be bland so it has to be taken in with other foods.

Unlike other diet programs, there are no restrictions in the food that you take in as long as you drink the cabbage soup with every meal. From low calorie vegetables to potatoes and beef, you can eat anything you want. Of course, dieters under the program are encouraged to take in fruits and vegetables as well as unsweetened fruit juices.

One guideline, however, that must be strictly met is the fact that all meals should be broiled, baked or boiled. No fried meals for the duration of the diet. Another guideline is to avoid alcohol, bread and other carbonated drinks that hastens weight gain.

One downside to the cabbage soup diet is the fact that it not for the long term. It can only be done for a period of seven days. By the end of the week, the person can lose as much as 15 pounds depending of course on the meal that he or she has eaten during the program and how much you have adhered to the guidelines. Beyond the prescribed week, continuing the program can be dangerous to one’s health as too much weight will already be lost.

Because of this, dieters often use the cabbage soup diet if they need to lose weight fast. In fact, most people use the program to get into shape before they enroll in a long term diet program. Some get into the cabbage soup diet program when they need to lose extra pounds for a special occasion.

Why You Should’Nt Try The Cabbage Soup Diet

Posted on 27 July 2010 by admin

Hello my name is William Messruther and I am a dieting consultant. I have been specialising in this field for around 6 years now and I focus my studies on fad diets, wether they work and the effects they can have on your body. For the next few weeks I will be writing articles for as many different fad diets as I can find myself. Here is my next installment, talking about the Cabbage Soup Diet.

The Cabbage Soup Diet, also known as The Sacred Heart Diet, Military Cabbage Soup Diet, TJ Miracle Soup Diet and the Russian Peasant Diet is basically a heavy consumption of low-calorie cabbage soup over a period of 7 days and has the intentions of losing you 10lbs in that time, from my point of view, this amount of weight loss in this short period of time is nearly impossible and unhealthy, and the lost weight will mostly be of water. The ‘pros’ of this diet are said to be fast weight loss, you can eat as much food as you want, that’s listed, and it provides a good kick start to other diets.

Typically, the diet consists of eating cabbage soup every day, complemented by some fruit, veg or beef, and drinks are limited to water except where stated otherwise. They say there are 6 key factors that make this diet successful and they are to follow the diet religiously, drink at least 4 glasses of water per day, remember that its only for 7 days, use multivitamin tablets to compliment, eat as much soup as you can and don’t go hungry, try spices to liven it up and break the monotony. A typical diet looks like this;

Day 1 – Cabbage soup, as much fruit as you like, excluding bananas

Day 2 – Cabbage soup, vegetables including 1 baked potato with a little butter

Day 3 – Cabbage soup, fruit and veg excluding potatoes and bananas

Day 4 – Cabbage soup, up to 8 bananas and as much skimmed milk as you want

Day 5 – Cabbage soup, up to 20 ounces of beef and up to six tomatoes

Day 6 – Cabbage soup, as much beef and veg (excluding potatoes) as you want

Day 7 – Cabbage soup, brown rice, veg (excluding potatoes) and unsweetened fruit juice

I will now give you my verdict on the cabbage soup diet and explain why I think you should not try it. First of all this is purely a short-term weight loss offering and unsuitable for a long term diet. This being because it is low calorie, low fat and very high fiber. You will go through several days at a time taking extremely high sodium and pretty much zero protein. This is unhealthy. You will feel nauseous, weak and have decreased concentration levels. Another common side effect is extremely bad wind! So you may want to keep those windows open at home and in the office! I do not recommend this diet to anybody.

Cabbage Soup Diet – The 5 Realities Of This Fad Diet

Posted on 08 June 2010 by admin

The Cabbage Soup Diet is a fad diet that has caught on for years now. Often called the “Sacred Heart Diet” and the “Military Cabbage Diet”, the Cabbage Soup Diet’s real origin has yet to be determined. No one has verified where the diet came from and if it is designed for any group of people in particular but the fact that the diet is sill around after so many years have shown its potential applicability.

The Cabbage Soup Diet has a detoxifying effect on the dieter as the diet is similar to a fast. However, because of the dangerously low levels of protein and carbohydrates in the soup, this diet is not recommended for everyone. Sandy, who has undergone the diet in the past finds it very effective and she has in fact lost eight pounds in just one week. She said she desperately needed to find a diet that can help her lose the pounds in time for her wedding. Although the diet is effective, it is not easy and the dieter should be aware of the implications before undertaking the diet.

1. It Limits Your Food Intake to Cabbage

You don’t necessarily have to love cabbage but you must have at least tolerance for this green leafy vegetable. It can be very bland and the diet often asks for other ingredients like crushed tomatoes and a celery stalk. On some days, other fruits and vegetables are added to the diet and the dieter is encouraged to eat as much fruits and vegetables available. Some try to add spices to make it more palatable but all in all, cabbage soup can be very boring and tasteless.

2. It Can Cause Other Symptoms During the Diet

The diet can cause irritability and headaches. Some people reported of lack of concentration often associated with hunger. Often, the dieter thinks nothing but of eating and since the cabbage soup is mostly liquid, it cannot fill you up. The diet recommends eating as much of the soup as you can especially if you’re hungry but the monotony of the diet can be trying.

3. The Aftereffects

The Cabbage Soup Diet, being a fad diet can lead to a regain of weight the week after. The diet can leave the dieter feeling very deprived and he or she has the tendency to eat more in the following week. This will lead to a yoyo diet, with the person often resorting to the diet when the need arises.

4. Realistic Weight Loss

The dieter has to be realistic about the amount of weight that is lost. Although there is a considerable amount of weight loss that the dieter will experience, it will most likely be water weight and lean muscle tissue. There is no discernable loss in body fat and the dieter will most likely regain the weight back if he or she doesn’t add an exercise regime to the program.

5. Diet Not for Everyone

The Cabbage Soup Diet is not ideal for anyone. There are some people who can take the diet and follow through but there are also those who need constant affirmation that the diet is worth it. Most importantly, people who are experiencing medical and health problems prior to the diet should ask the advice of their physicians first before undertaking the diet.
